Materials: “dippy” tray, one bottle each of salt water, acid solution, base solution, phenolphthalein, vial of red litmus paper, vial of blue litmus paper, masking tape.
Process:
- Make a copy of the lab template on your own paper (1 paper /group).
- Collect your materials.
- Take out one red litmus strip and one blue litmus strip.
- Place them side by side and using the masking tape, tape them together on one end. This setup allows you to dip both papers in one test solution and see the results right off. Make 2 of these setups. *[if red turns blue and blue stays blue you have a base. If red stays red and blue turns red you have an acid. And if red stays red and blue stays blue you have a neutral solution.] Note that you can use these double setups for testing many items if you keep cutting off the wet part and use the dry to test another solution.
- On the “dippy” tray label in pencil one dip for acid, another for base and another for salt water.
- Place one or two drops of acid, base and salt water in the correctly labeled dip.
- Use your double strip setup to test each solution and record the results in the data table.
- Next add one drop of phenolphthalein to each solution being careful to let the drop fall in to the acid, base and salt water without touching the tip of the bottle to the acid, base or salt water solution. **
- Record your results for the phenolphthalein in the data table.
- Finish the paper and turn it in to the white tray.
- Go back to the chemical families sheet and continue on with questions 22 & 23 and the final lab.
Your Indicator Lab paper should have the format listed below the colored drawings.
